I securely deleted my data/photos/documents with iShredder. How can I recover this data?
If you securely deleted data with iShredder, that erasure process is based on internationally recognized security standards such as US DoD 5220.22-M or the BSI standard. iShredder overwrites the relevant storage areas multiple times with special erasure algorithms and random patterns. This effectively prevents any later data recovery — even with professional recovery software or forensic methods.
When an operating system deletes data in the normal way, it only removes the reference to the file. The actual data usually remains physically present and can often be recovered with some effort. iShredder, by contrast, overwrites exactly that “free space” multiple times and makes it unreadable, so the original data blocks can no longer be reconstructed.
- Multiple overwriting passes
iShredder uses more than 20 certified erasure algorithms, including DoD 5220.22-M, BSI TL-03423, and NATO standards. Multiple overwriting passes ensure that the original data is permanently destroyed. - Destruction of virtual remnants
During secure erasure, hidden caches, temporary files, and logs are also cleaned up so that no usable traces of data remain. - Erasure reports & proof
After every erasure process, iShredder can create a detailed report on request. It documents exactly which data or areas were erased and shows the algorithm used. This gives you proof at any time that the data was irreversibly deleted — ideal for companies in the context of audits or GDPR compliance. - A word about recovery
Because iShredder securely overwrites all data blocks, there is no simple or known technical way to access that data again. This is known as “irreversible data destruction.” If you have processed your device or storage with iShredder, you should therefore assume that all deleted data has actually been removed permanently.
What should you do if you still want to back up or recover data?
- Create copies in advance: Before deleting important files with iShredder, always create backups (for example on an external hard drive or in the cloud). Once iShredder has done its job, a later recovery attempt is practically ruled out.
- Recovery is only possible in a limited way after “imprecise” deletion: If you only used the operating system’s standard delete function and not iShredder, some data may still be recoverable.
- Deleted by mistake? As soon as you run iShredder (or a comparable certified data destruction program), that data is very likely lost forever.
Recovering data that was securely deleted with iShredder is practically impossible. The program is designed specifically to permanently prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information. Whether photos, documents, or entire drive contents — after using iShredder, the data is permanently destroyed.
For you, this means maximum security: unauthorized or later access is prevented. However, it is also important to think carefully before deleting anything, because even specialized recovery tools can no longer help after an iShredder erase process.
