Why does iShredder display data sizes in KiB, MiB, GiB instead of the more common KB, MB, GB?

iShredder uses binary prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) by default because they more accurately reflect the exact number of bytes being processed.

  • KiB (kibibyte), MiB (mebibyte), GiB (gibibyte) are based on 1024-byte increments (1 KiB = 1024 bytes).
  • KB (kilobyte), MB (megabyte), GB (gigabyte) are based on 1000-byte increments (1 KB = 1000 bytes).

Many technical systems, including operating systems, work internally with multiples of 1024. As a result, iShredder ensures that the displayed file size precisely matches what is actually being erased. This difference in notation has no impact on the effectiveness of the deletion process: your data is always securely and permanently removed, regardless of which unit is used.
