Why does iShredder display data sizes in KiB, MiB, and GiB instead of the more common KB, MB, and GB?

By default, iShredder uses the binary prefixes KiB/MiB/GiB because they describe more precisely how many bytes are actually being processed.

  • KiB (kibibyte), MiB (mebibyte), GiB (gibibyte) are based on 1024-step units (1 KiB = 1024 bytes).
  • KB (kilobyte), MB (megabyte), GB (gigabyte) are based on 1000-step units instead (1 KB = 1000 bytes).

Many technical systems — including operating systems — calculate internally using 1024-step units. That is why iShredder ensures that the displayed file size exactly matches what is actually being erased. This different notation has no effect at all on the effectiveness of the erasure process: your data is always deleted securely and permanently, regardless of which unit is used.
