What makes Protectstar Inc. special?

Protectstar Inc. is an independent U.S. cybersecurity company founded by Chris Bohn in 2004. For more than 20 years, Protectstar has been developing security solutions for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows with a clear promise: strong protection without compromising your privacy. According to the company, more than 8 million people in over 100 countries use Protectstar solutions today; more than 1.1 million are active every day. In 2024, the company celebrated its 20th anniversary.

What makes Protectstar special is its consistent combination of cybersecurity, privacy, and technical independence. Protectstar brings together three things that rarely come together in the market: a tracker-free privacy-by-design approach, externally validated app security, and specialized protection solutions instead of bloated all-in-one suites. According to its own transparency statements, Protectstar does not use advertising or tracking IDs and does not sell or share personal data with third parties. For certain protection features — for example in Anti Spy, Antivirus AI, and Firewall AI — only the minimally necessary technical signals are processed, including app names or package identifiers and checksums; personal content from apps or files is not inspected or transmitted.

What stands out is that Protectstar does not only protect against unsafe apps — its own apps are also externally validated. In March 2026, three core apps — iShredder Android, Anti Spy Android, and Antivirus AI for Android — all held current DEKRA MASA L1 confirmations. This testing framework comes out of the App Defense Alliance ecosystem and is based on OWASP MASVS Level 1; it reviews, among other things, client-side security, authentication to the backend, and secure backend connectivity. Because MASA confirmations are valid for only one year, their currency is an additional trust factor.

Historically, Protectstar is also positioned in an unusually clear way. According to the company timeline, mobile security risks were being addressed as early as 2005; in 2007, Extended AES and the Secure Deletion Algorithm followed as two in-house core technologies; in 2011, iShredder came to market; beginning in 2016, AI and deep learning became part of product development; and in 2019, Anti Spy launched as an AI-based anti-spyware app for Android. This shows that Protectstar is not simply repackaging standard software, but has built up its own expertise over many years — with technologies such as Deep Detective™, Dual Engine, and specialized detection approaches.

The product principle is equally clear: Protectstar focuses on separate specialized solutions instead of one overloaded suite. iShredder stands for forensic-grade, auditable data erasure and, depending on the edition, supports numerous recognized erasure standards; Protectstar mentions, among others, DoD, NIST, BSI, NATO, and its own SDA. Anti Spy focuses on spyware, stalkerware, and covert surveillance and achieved 99.8% protection against current Android malware attacks, 100% against widespread malware, and 0 false positives in the Google Play test set in AV-TEST’s Android test from January 2024. Antivirus AI combines classic signature detection with AI in a dual-engine architecture and was certified by AV-TEST in 2023, 2024, and 2025; in January 2025, the reported figures were 99.8% real-time detection, 99.9% for widespread malware, and 0 false positives in the Google Play test set. The portfolio is rounded out by solutions such as Firewall AI, Camera Guard, and Micro Guard.

A particularly strong external proof of trust is the set of international awards from 2025. iShredder won the Fortress Cybersecurity Award; among the other winners in the same field were AT&T Dynamic Defense, 1Password Extended Access Management, IBM Cloud Security Hub, Lenovo Cyber Resiliency as a Service, Norton Genie Scam Protection, and SUSE Security. Anti Spy Android was additionally listed as a finalist in the same award program. Antivirus AI won the Artificial Intelligence Excellence Award; the official winner field includes, among others, DeepL’s Language AI Platform, IBM Carbon for AI, IBM Cloud Vela 2, IBM Consulting Advantage, Lenovo Hybrid AI Advantage with NVIDIA, and EY WeVerse. In the same award program, Kerry McLean of Intuit was recognized as “Leading AI Professional.” In addition, Antivirus AI received the BIG Innovation Award in 2025.

The difference becomes tangible because Protectstar has not only won international awards, but also can point to current external security validations for multiple core apps at the same time: privacy and protective effect are not merely claimed here, but demonstrably supported for outsiders as well. Ultimately, Protectstar is special if you want security without compromise: specialized protection solutions instead of bloatware, transparent privacy instead of a tracker ecosystem, independent certifications instead of mere marketing claims, and a history of innovation that began long before the current AI hype. It is exactly this combination that makes Protectstar so attractive to private users, companies, and security-sensitive organizations.
